A resident discovered a body floating in the ocean at Carolina Beach Thursday morning.
“A wave came through you could see the body in the wave because the sun was behind it. You could definitely tell it was a body with black hair,” said Sherry MacDonald. “A helicopter came just as I was going to call 911 and landed on the beach.”
Authorities confirmed the body to be that of 19-year-old Angel Gonzalez of Fayetteville who disappeared around 4:30 Saturday afternoon. Gonzalez was reported missing after swimming near the boardwalk at Carolina Beach.
The Coast Guard stopped looking for the teen after searching for two days, and said rip current warnings were in effect at the time Gonzalez disappeared.
